Hello and welcome to
Kyl Reber.com.au
Thanks so much for taking the time to have a look at what I have done, what I am going to do, and my own little ideas and thoughts on the world in general.
There’s a lot to tell, and a heap to share, so this site will always be “a work in progress”
Maybe some of what I have learned, and the experiences I will share with you, can help you one day – I hope they do.
But…… Every journey needs a beginning, and the Martial Arts has, and still does, play a significant part in the life of our family.
Kyl has been involved in Zen Do Kai Martial Arts and BJC Muay Thai since 1994. Currently he holds the rank of 7th Degree Black Belt Kyoshi in Zen Do Kai Freestyle Martial Arts, 7th Degree Trainer (Kru) in BJC Muay Thai, and 1st Degree Instructor in BJMA Krav Maga. Kyl is also a 1st Degree Black Belt in Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under 5th Degree Black Belt Peter de Been, and is the head of the Brisbane De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Brisbane Academy.
Growing up in country Queensland, and earning a Black Belt in another Martial Art in his teenage years, Kyl sought to find a style when he moved to a Brisbane for University that based its teaching principles on real-life self defence and practical solutions to confrontations in today’s society, so made the switch to Zen Do Kai under the tutelage of 9th Degree Black Belt Hanshi Brad Ross. Kyl still retains Brad as his original Zen Do Kai and BJC Muay Thai instructor. During this progression Kyl has had the assistance of best friend and 7th Degree Black Belt, Kyoshi Bruce Maile.
2019 will see Kyl’s 25th year of teaching and spreading the philosophies of Martial Arts, and showing the wider community what learning to defend yourself can do for you, your friends and your loved ones. One thing Kyl constantly tells people is that “There is so much more to what we do than just punching and kicking”. Currently Kyl teaches Zen Do Kai, BJC Muay Thai, BJC Kidz Karate, De Been Kidz Jiu Jitsu, BJC Kidz Thaiboxing, BJMA Krav Maga, and De Been Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In the last 17 years Kyl has developed a love for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and was drawn to the art in an effort to become a ‘complete’ martial artist and be comfortable with and competent in defending himself both standing up and on the ground, which is statistically where the greater majority of street orientated encounters end up. Under the expert instruction of Gracie BJJ Black Belts Darren McKean and Peter de Been, Kyl has been able to form a very solid foundation of techniques which he passes on in his BJJ classes. Kyl was awarded his Black Belt in BJJ in July 2013, and communicates regularly with Pete to keep up to date with the latest techniques and concepts.
Through his years with Zen Do Kai, Kyl has had the opportunity to train with such prominent martial artists as Soke Bob Jones (Zen Do Kai Founder), Richard Norton (martial arts movie star, 9th Degree Black Belt Zen Do Kai), Peter De Been (Gracie Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and Head Coach of Gracie Barra Australia), Systema expert Alex Kostic, and Billy Manne (9th Degree Zen Do Kai Black Belt and BJJ Black Belt).
Kyl travels extensively to Melbourne, New Zealand, and Thailand to teach seminars and also learn new techniques to pass on to the now 200+ students that train under him at CMA.
Kyl also brings to the floor the wealth of knowledge and experience he gained from working in the security and crowd control industry for nearly 19 years, during which time he ran the security teams at many popular Brisbane nightclubs and hotels, and also operated in a supervisory role at many of the major concerts and festivals in Brisbane and northern New South Wales, providing protective security to some of the most popular bands in Australia and the world. Kyl’s fondest memories of this career is working at events such at Suncorp Stadium (standing on the field at State of Orgin), The Big Day Out (17 years in a row), Splendour in the Grass, Soundwave, and Brisbane’s iconic Festival Hall, meeting and working with bands and artists he had adored as a child, and now working with them in the flesh. The downside of this career (but in a way the upside for his students), were the situations he was involved in over that time, and the invaluable lessons he learned. This knowledge of real world tried and tested self defence is something that Kyl is particularly passionate about, and passes this knowledge onto his students in an effort to prepare them for any street orientated encounter they may face.
As a father now of two beautiful girls, teaching this real world, no nonsense self defence to anyone who wants to learn has never been more important to him.
Kyl also has a very deep passion for health and fitness, and passes this on to all his students, from the adults right down to the kids. This helps to develop a positive mentality and teach them to treat their bodies with respect and give them the fuel that they need to achieve the goals and create the engines that will take them there. Kyl currently holds a level 1 Certification with The QLD Weightlifting Federation, a CrossFit Kids Trainers Certificate, and a CrossFit Level 1 Certificate.
Kyl has a firm belief that everyone is capable of learning and benefiting from Martial Arts and everything it can give you no matter what your age. Turning the ripe old age of 43 this year, Kyl works tirelessly to send a message to all ages and demographics that Martial Arts can be the answer to finding something that may have been missing in your life, and that learning to defend yourself is just one of the things Martial Arts can give you and your loved ones.
Kyl is available for seminar, personal training and speaking engagements. You can contact Kyl on kyl@chikaramartialarts.com.au or call +61 402 465 441

Resilience – Tolerance – Defiance
I always have friends who don’t do Martial Arts wonder why the hell I subject my body to this punishment. These days it’s usually chiropractors, physios and doctors when I go to them trying to “un-broken” myself. It’s kinda funny – there’s just no point explaining...
You Can’t Save Everybody – But You Can Try
I started writing this review literally within an hour of learning that a friend and old student of mine had died. It was like therapy for me. I have had to come back to it and tweak it a bit. It was probably too raw. 2 months or so down the track and I’m going to...
